Interoception: The Bridge Between the Body and the Mind
Main Article Content
Abstract
Interoception is the process through which the brain perceives, processes, and integrates physiological body signals, playing a key role in homeostatic regulation, emotion, pain perception, and overall well-being. Its processing involves brain structures such as the insula, thalamus, and cingulate cortex, operating under a predictive processing model where the brain compares expectations with actual body signals. Dysfunction in interoception is associated with anxiety, depression, eating disorders, chronic fatigue, and sexual dysfunctions. Therapeutic strategies such as mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and biofeedback have shown effectiveness in interoceptive regulation. Ongoing research in this field continues to expand its impact on neuroscience, mental health, and sexual therapy, emphasizing its importance in promoting better quality of life and a stronger mind-body connection.
